Ichthyol ointment is a traditional medicine for topical application to the skin, with astringent and antibacterial properties, prepared according to the Polish Pharmacopoeia. Ichthyol ointment is recommended for use in the treatment of skin eczema, furunculosis and acne. In addition, ichthyol has an anti-edematous and locally warming effect.

Ichthyol is a product of dry distillation of oil shale, with a characteristic smell and dark red color. Ichthyol occurs in two varieties: dark and light. Ichthyol ointment contains a dark fraction, while light ichthyol appears in the Mediderm shampoo preparation. Ammonium sulfobituminate, as ichthyol is also sometimes called, has a multifaceted effect. First of all, it has anti-inflammatory, bacteriostatic, anti-edematous and supports the extraction of pus. The substance has been used in pharmacy recipes since the 16th century. It is sometimes confused with tar, due to the similar production process and use.

100 g of ointment contains: ichtamol 10 g auxiliary substances: lanolin and yellow petrolatum Indications: in eczema, furunculosis and acne as a bacteriostatic agent and facilitating the removal of pus.

Contraindications: hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients of the drug.

Method of use: externally, lubricate the affected areas 1-2 times a day. In case of doubts about the use of the drug, consult a doctor or pharmacist.
